Frederick Douglass (1818—1895) was a giant in the American abolitionist and civil rights movements in 19th century America. He escaped from slavery in 1838 and became a brilliant writer, orator, and statesman.
While treadling away on the printing press as I printed these postcards, I had ample time to continue to reflect on Douglass’s words. He spoke them on April 16th, 1883 — the 21st anniversary of emancipation in the District of Columbia — and 141 years later, those words are still alive, active, and relevant. When I think of a nation being “honest,” what comes to mind is transparency of intent and action; “truthful” might be the practice of clear and trustworthy communication; “virtuous” might mean fidelity to ethical principles and conduct on behalf of all. What do you think it means to be a democratic country that is “honest, truthful, & virtuous”?
