The Angle of Dazzle ~ H.D. Thoreau
The Angle of Dazzle ~ H.D. Thoreau
From the Journal of Henry David Thoreau
A limited edition, letterpress printed selection from one of our favorite sources of wisdom, wit, and wonder: the journals of Henry David Thoreau. This entry, from December of 1855, is a marvelous meditation on perception and presence, and an invitation to look again at what we think we see, what we think we know, what we think we are. As Thoreau relates, a whole new world can be revealed by just a slight shift in perspective — what we’re calling The Angle of Dazzle.
"It is only necessary to behold thus the least fact or phenomenon, however familiar, from a point a hair’s breadth aside from our habitual path or routine, to be overcome, enchanted by its beauty and significance."
Henry David Thoreau, 1855

Every project here at St Brigid Press begins with the words — with language that is alive and activating. When I choose to print a text it is because it moves me and feels essential: it is something that I want to press into the hands of whomever I meet, because of its potential to be a catalyst for human life and thought. This book features just such a text. As Thoreau relates, a whole new world can be revealed by just a slight shift in perspective — an angle of dazzle, delight, and new vision.
One of the maxims at St Brigid Press is, If you believe in the words, believe in the work. It has been my honor to work with this text, with carver Lana Lambert who joined in to add her vision, as well as the type-casters Bixler and the papermakers Magnani and Berretti — the whole interwoven ecology of craft — to bring some of Thoreau's words to light and life, from these hands and hearts to yours.
